Should Have Read the Small Letter

Yuval sighed deeply, watching his demon retreat, wounded in what was obviously more than a physical way. What had he done? Had he seriously been more worried about the sword, than about Amath? Had he not clearly been in pain when he’d first seen him? What was wrong with him? Yuval fell on the chair by the desk, unsure. He looked up at the sword and found his hand somehow resting over it again. He snatched it back, breath shuddering.

“What is wrong with me?” he whispered, trembling.

He had tried to ignore it, the way he would sometimes find himself holding to the sword without having meant to take it, the way his eyes always seemed to find their way to it even when he didn’t want to. Amath had noticed something too, he was always looking at him funny when he was around the sword. Something was wrong. Something was seriously wrong. The sword had some kind of spell on it for sure, something that was making him act this way. And he felt weak. Weak, but energized. He felt as if his energy were being sapped, but then he would happen to lay with Amath, and the exchange of energy would make him feel renewed and energized. Could it be that Amath’s energy was cloaking what the sword was doing to him?

Yuval hesitated, then got up. He went after Amath, worried about his demon.

“Amath!” he called out, looking around at the forest. Where to start looking for him? Could he have gone to the river? “Amath!!”

Yuval sighed and closed his eyes. He tried to focus on the link between them, tried to single it out. There. He focused on it with all his might, and slowly followed its lead.

Stronger.

Stronger.

The closer he got to Amath, the stronger he felt it. But then, a little suddenly, it went weak again. Puzzled, Yuval tried to find it again, but couldn’t, so he continued the way he’d last felt it... And then he saw him: his demon, collapsed in the middle of the forest.

“Amath!” Yuval ran to him and dropped on his knees by him, pulling him partially on his lap so he’d be looking up.

“Amath!” He leaned in, listening to the shallow breathing, then placing his ear to his heart. It beat weakly.

“Shit-” he pulled back to press his hands to his chest, focusing all his healing energy there. He was rewarded with a small gasp, with a slightly stronger heartbeat. “Amath?”

The demon’s eyes slowly blinked open, slit pupils dilating slowly, then narrowing again to adjust to the light.

“Are you alright?” Yuval asked, watching him worriedly.

Those golden eyes focused slowly on him, pupils again adjusting. Amath tried to roll to his side, to get up. Again his better judgment, Yuval helped him.

“What happened?”

“Don’t know,” Amath rasped, not looking too good still.

Yuval hesitated, then gently tried to help him stand, pulling at his arms, using some of his magic to aid them both. “Come here, let’s get you back, get you in bed.
